Welcome to British Foodie! Thank you for stopping by to learn more about us.
Meet Carys
Hi, I’m Carys, the author and recipe creator behind British Foodie. English is my mother tongue, and though I never lived in the British Isles, I grew up in an ex-British colony, deeply influenced by British culture. My journey into British recipes began in 2017 when I started working on another food blog and what started as a job turned into a passion for rediscovering old, authentic British recipes.
My Journey with Food
Travelling and trying new foods have always fascinated me, especially Asian cuisines like Chinese, Korean, and Indian. Nevertheless, growing up on British food, I always felt that as a family we never delved deeper beyond the popular fish and chips, cakes, pies, and casseroles. and influences of chefs like Jamie Oliver, Gordon Ramsay, and Mary Berry used as a reference to prepare Christmas lunches and festive gatherings.
So, I decided to uncover the hidden gems of British cuisine, from creamy fish soups typical of coastal towns to healthy kedgeree for breakfast. By raiding family old recipes, I started to discover on what ended up as a collection of both popular and forgotten classics with different takes from region to region. Some of my favourite recipes featured on the blog include Welsh Cakes, Ham and Pease Pudding, Rhubarb Crumble, Scottish Macaroni and Cheese Pie, and Cranachan.
Challenges and Aspirations
Running a small website comes with its challenges. Changes in search engine algorithms and the rise of AI-generated content have made it harder for small blogs to maintain visibility. Often, recipes from smaller blogs get overshadowed by larger sites like BBCGoodFood or just discovered from recipe links from Reddit, Facebook and PInterest. However, I believe users will appreciate the effort and authenticity behind this page, knowing that a real person has researched and tested these recipes.
And who knows, while I don’t live in the British Isles now, it’s a possibility down the road. Regardless, I want to pass on my British roots to my children and teach them the true taste of British food.
What Makes British Foodie Unique
This blog isn’t about chasing search engine rankings or affiliate profits. It’s for people genuinely interested in British cuisine. Unfortunately, I worked for some years on another journey and we ended up losing our initial purpose since we needed to attract more visitors. Truly, I felt we lost our North Star. Nevertheless, here I will strive to remain faithful and authentic to my original purpose and preserve traditional recipes, sharing tips and new finds as a British Foodie.
