Add some fresh fruits like apples and grapes for a touch of sweetness. This traditional British meal is perfect for sharing and nibbling while enjoying the serene surroundings.

250 g (8-10 oz) cheddar cheese or other robust cheese like Stilton cut into wedges or slices. 1 loaf crusty whole grain bread or sourdough, sliced into 4 pieces or more. 6 Branston pickles or 4-6 pickled onions/pickled gherkins. 250 g (7-9 oz) cold meats like ham, roast beef, or similar. sliced. Salad Vegetables: 1 small head of lettuce torn into leaves. 2 tomatoes sliced. 4 radishes sliced. 1 cucumber sliced. 4 eggs hard-boiled, peeled and cut in half. 2 apples cored and sliced or quartered. 50 g (2 oz) butter 2 oz for spreading. 100 g (3½ oz) chutney 1 small pork pie (optional) cut into 4 wedges. 1 small bunch of parsley or chives for garnish.
Prepare the Ingredients: Slice or wedge the cheese and slice the loaf. Wash and slice the vegetables. Slice the meat if necessary.
Hard-boil, peel and cut in half the eggs.
Arrange the pickles in small bowls or dishes.
Slice or quarter the apples
Place the butter in a dish.
Spoon the chutney into a small dish if using.
Cut the pork pie into wedges if using.
Assemble the Ploughman’s Lunch: Arrange the cheese, bread, pickles, and meats on a large platter or individual plates.
Add the salad vegetables around the plate.
Include the hard-boiled eggs and apple slices.
Place a small dish of butter and chutney if using.
Garnish with fresh herbs if desired.
